Ok! Last time, I was ranting and raving about how I LLLLOOOVVVVEEEEDDDD my garden. Now…..not so much. Ok, I do…but it’s been downgraded to conditional status. Our part of the globe was shocked by an unexpected cold snap which damaged quite a few plants, like my trumpet vine. I’m still praying that some of my tried and true hydrangeas come back to life….only time will tell and for now…it’s not looking that good.
We’ve spent a lot of time deadheading withered leaves and flower buds and to a certain extent, it’s paying off. The new shade bed is doing exceptionally well….all of the plants are getting so big. I think one of the smartest things I’ve done is to join the Home Depot garden club. They send coupons via email and I was able to buy even more plants for the yard. I’m telling you…..one day there will be no more grass to fight with!
We finally got to clean out the pond. I’ve made a mental note to try to remove the pond netting at the first indication of 70 degree temps each year. Otherwise, the marginals will have a chance to grow up and through that darn net. It’s no fun trying to untangle all of that mess. After trudging through the muck and mire and disposing of two tarps full of pine needles, I threw in a couple of mosquito dunks in the hope of keeping them in check.
I had to order a new metal umbrella for the patio set on the deck. I will never buy a wooden umbrella again….it just doesn’t hold up well in the elements. I got around to adding more shade plants to the shade bed that we created last year. We decided to get pine bark mulch to help the area retain moisture…it dries out very quickly due to the vast number of tree roots surrounding it.
Our current project is to repaint the front porch’s spindles and railings. The last time we painted we stopped after applying the primer. I know….lazy…. But this time, we are going to prime and paint the entire thing….no matter what. We get a lot of sun, so I bought outdoor shades to protect us while we are sitting on the porch. I didn’t want to use the new shades when the railings were covered in mold and mildew and the paint chipping, so that had to be addressed.
I was able to score free scalloped borders from work. At some point, we will place those around the Greek goddess statue to give it more definition.
Sadly, I still haven’t gotten to the fountain….in between the constant mowing, weeding, deadheading, watering, etc. I haven’t made time for it….but soon….soon.
