The past couple of weeks have been weird. During the week, the weather is cold, bitter and wet. Getting up to go to work in it is no fun, but you do what you have to, right? Then comes the weekend….the weather while still mild, it almost beautiful. This explains how we got so many rudimentary things done in the yard over the past two weekends.
We started out surveying the entire yard and making mental notes of what did not work last year. One such revelation was in the form of the flower bed where the hebe goddess is centered. There’s a lot of weeds that seem to thrive in that area, so we decided it was best to redo that area by covering the offending weeds with lovely flagstone with the goddess centered again and another area where we can place a bench. If you can picture a statistical chart that shows the standard deviation (it looks like a mountain’s hump), the goddesses would be placed at the top and the bench right behind it.
We want to plant the surrounding area with various perennials and some annuals. However, that will have to wait until the economy improves besides the flagstone that the supplier had reeked. They aren’t placing any new orders right now either so we don’t have much of a choice anyway.
Next, we managed to clean every flower bed that we have which are many. There was a lot of leaves to pull out, spent perennials that needed to be added to the compost pile and mental notes taken about how we could improve each one. I had left over tulip bulbs that I found a home for as well….just in the nick of time! I bought a few pansies so that I could have a little color in this miserable climate. Also, we had a few plants that we neglected to put in the ground last Fall so we took care of that.
We had lots of riff rap rock that I managed to give away on freecycle along with some lumber that we used to line beds. I plan to buy river rock (later on) to frame each bed for a more natural look. I had offered a few established plants that would need to be dug up, but no takers. Next on the agenda…….rose pruning and since I’m now stocked up with alfalfa pellets thanks to the Tractor Supply store, I should have beautiful roses again.
